Estate and Gardens
The gardens at Sharrow Bay are nestled beneath Barton Fell in twelve acres of private grounds with half a mile of lake frontage. Running from the hotel parallel to the shore of the lake, the main ornamental garden is essentially one dramatic vista framed by magnificent yew hedges. The hotels gardens are wonderful in themselves, however the views from them across Ullswater are simply stunning.
Robert Hawkins, the Sharrow Bay Head Gardener has worked at Sharrow Bay since 1968. When Robert began working at Sharrow Bay there were no gardens, everything is Roberts own creation. Robert has been planning on retiring for the last five years; however his passion to create something even greater each year has led to him recently putting his retirement on hold.
Robert uses gardening skills that are almost now extinct, relying on the large scale bedding characteristic of grand private house gardens, a method which has almost virtually disappeared.
