Local Attractions
For those of a more active disposition the area is rich in possibilities. Guests can enjoy a fabulous cruise of the breathtaking lake on an Ullswater Steamer, lake swimming, fishing and, of course, walking or climbing. The Ullswater Walking festival provides something for everybody, from the tentative would-be walker to the more experienced mountaineer. Let's not forget the famous Lowther Horse Trials in which H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh regularly competes in the carriage driving event.
Nowhere in England can match the variety of walks available to guests at Sharrow Bay and what is better news to walkers than the fact that, from March 2006, Sharrow Bay is becoming increasingly walker friendly. Sharrow Bay can now provide detailed maps and a vastly experienced tour leader for all those guests staying who want to see the best nearby sites, whilst being educated on their history and heritage. Take a look at the Lake District guided walks available during your stay.
The walk from Howtown along the lakeside to Patterdale at the head of the lake and return from Glenridding back to Howtown by Ullswater Steamer is a favourite day out for many Sharrow guests – especially if fortified with a Sharrow picnic lunch. Hadrian’s Wall, Lake Windermere, the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and Dalemain House and Gardens, are not far away and well worth a visit.
Sharrow Bay is also well placed for guests wishing to explore the many attractions of the county of Cumbria. For instance, the Cumbria Food and Drink Festival takes place every May, with gastronomic tours by Annette Gibbons, and is well worth a visit. Greystoke Castle has a fantastic selection of outdoor pursuits and activities such as clay pigeon shooting, fishing, quad biking and much more. Silloth on Solway Golf Course is great for the keen golfer and for a great day out Carlisle Racecourse and Cartmel Racecourse are also worth a visit. Many places of interest are within easy reach of Sharrow and hotel staff are always available to help guests make the most of their stay.
The Rheged Centre, the newest and the largest visitor attraction ever to open in Cumbria, is a fabulous and inspiring day out, and this year one of our Michelin star chefs will be demonstrating his talents with a fantastic cookery demonstration.
A nearby family-run Audi dealership, Hadwins Audi, has joined forces with Sharrow Bay to work on a number of charity events and have formed a very special, but very natural, relationship combining the same philosophies with regards to levels of quality and service.
Here at Sharrow Bay, we work closely with Lakes and Country, a premium Lake District estate agency, and are able to offer clients a luxury country house base from which to explore and house hunt.
